Australian pricing for the 2022 BMW iX M60 has been announced at $222,900 plus on-road costs ahead of the flagship electric SUV’s local arrival in the final quarter of this year.
That means the highest-performing and most lavishly equipped variant in the local iX range commands a big $53,000 premium over the already quick and luxurious BMW iX xDrive50 Sport ($169,900).
Packing enormous 455kW/1100Nm outputs and a 3.8-second 0-100km/h time, the BMW iX M60 will be the second battery-electric M Performance model to reach Australian shores after the BMW i4 M50, foreshadowing an electrification onslaught from the Bavarian performance brand.
BMW says its most lavish and technologically advanced model to date will cover up to 566km on a single charge and top out at 250km/h, thanks to a 112kWh high energy density battery feeding two electric motors – one on each axle.
Like most EVs, that battery is stashed low under the floor and between the axles in the interests of packaging and handing.
Able to be charged at up to 200kW, BMW says the iX M60’s battery can be ‘refuelled’ from 10 to 80 per cent of its capacity in around 35 minutes, with 150km of range said to be added in just 10 minutes when hooked up to a DC fast-charger.
Like all M Performance variants, the top-spec iX is gifted with a more aggressive body kit and other styling features including new 22-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, behind which lurk blue sports brake callipers.
The more menacing demeanour is continued within the cabin by sport seats, a hexagonal steering wheel, a handful of M badges and anthracite headlining.
The 2022 BMW iX M60 also features Comfort Access, BMW ‘Curved Display’ infotainment and instrumentation, BMW Operating System 8.0, a Bowers and Wilkins diamond surround sound system, panoramic glass roof and soft-close doors.
In terms of technology and driver aids, BMW Laserlight, BMW IconicSounds Electric Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Professional and BMW Natural Interaction (gesture control and eye tracking) are all included.
Under the skin is an ‘integral active steering’ system, sports-tuned adaptive air suspension, sports tyres, tyre pressure monitoring and an M Sport brake package.
But all of these standard features are merely highlights alongside a long list of optional extras.
Those fancying a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats and an elaborate cabin heating system can opt for the $3500 Comfort Package.
Eight colours – Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Sophisto Grey, Phytonic Blue, Blue Ridge Mountain, Oxide Grey, Storm Bay (optional extra) and Aventurine Red (optional extra) – will be available, as will three different no-cost interior upholstery packs.
“The iX M60 is the third variant in the BMW iX line-up and represents the latest fully electric offering from the BMW M high performance brand following the BMW i4 M50, which launched in Australia in March,” BMW Australia said.
“Launches of the iX M60 and i4 M50 models are significant developments in a year when BMW M celebrates its 50th anniversary.”
The fourth quarter of the year will be a busy period for BMW as it targets local launches for not only the iX M60, but the updated BMW 3 Series, BMW M4 CSL and the limited-run BMW M4 Edition 50 Jahre.
While it’s still at least six months away from Aussie showrooms, we’ve actually already driven the new performance EV overseas; you can read our first drive review here.
