Toyota's Prius has topped the US EPA and Energy Department's fuel economy ratings list, with ratings of 4.9L/100km (city) and 5.2L/100km (hwy).
Hybrids took out five of the top six places on the list, with only the Smart Fortwo interrupting the procession.
The little Smart was one of two new entries on the list, alongside Volkswagen's Jetta TDI
Market analyst JD Power says the 2009 list gives "a clear picture of the most effective fuel-efficiency strategies available today: hybrid gas-electric technology is at the forefront, followed by clean diesel and small cars."
