Mini used the 2009 Frankfurt motor show to reveal its Coupe Concept, and the baby-car specialist will use the same show this year to unveil the car in production form.
Pictured alongside are Mini-supplied images of a partially camouflaged prototype undergoing final testing prior to its launch later this year.
Mini claims the two-seater newcomer will "breathe new life into its successful racing history" and "provide a shot in the arm for the super-compact sports car class".
The company also says the engines, chassis set-up, weight distribution and aerodynamic properties of the Mini Coupe are focused on delivering optimum performance.
Engine outputs range from 90kW in the entry-level Mini Cooper Coupe, 105kW in the Cooper SD Coupe, 135kW in the Cooper S Coupe and 155kW in the John Cooper Works Coupe.
A six-speed manual gearbox will be fitted as standard, with a six-speed automatic optional for all but the John Cooper Works model.
Visually, the Coupe stands apart from its siblings via its "helmet roof" that incorporates an integral roof spoiler, with an active rear spoiler (that deploys at 80km/h) further contributing to high-speed stability.
Its practicality credentials are said to benefit from a high-opening tailgate and large luggage area with through-loading facility.
The company also boasts of "unrivalled handling agility and the best performance figures of any model in the Mini line-up", adding that the car's chassis set-up, weight balance and body structure were designed to provide "unbeatable driving fun".
Electric Power Steering and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) will be standard across the range, with DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) and EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) optional (standard on John Cooper Works Coupe).
