The new car, the Proton Satria R3, is fitted with a high-performance version of the 1.6-litre CamPro engine and has cosmetic and suspension upgrades to match.
Proton is definitely going ahead with a production model, but is reluctant to reveal much about the blitzer ahead of its public unveiling.
We expect that power will possibly exceed that available from the last of the 1.8-litre Satria GTis, which ceased production with the introduction of the new generation Satria Neo.
"The question we get asked all the time is when will the next Satria GTi be here, the first generation GTi carved a real niche for itself and it is a bit of a cult car, the R3 Satria certainly gives some pointers to what its successor might look like", said John Startari, Proton Cars Australia Managing Director.
Proton will also launch the new Persona sedan in Melbourne.
