Proton has announced a new model to bolster its Suprima S hatchback range, the Super Premium R3 variant.
The sporty-looking top-shelf model will joining the Suprima S small car range "later in the year" says Proton. It is expected to be positioned slightly above the GXR model's $26,590 drive-away pricing due to the aggressive exterior styling additions.
The R3 bodykit comprises a new look front spoiler, side skirts and rear bumper, finished in a contrasting darker colour.
Apart from new look 17-inch alloy wheels, the rest of the vehicle appears to be identical to the GXR model which went on sale in Australia along with the entry-level Suprima GX ($21,790 drive-away) in January 2014.
That means it shares its 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, worth 103kW/205Nm, and the same suspension setup which has been "enhanced with Lotus ride and handling" to deliver an "outstanding driving experience" says the Malaysian car maker.
The compact engine funnels its power through a continuously variable transmission, which has a seven-speed override mode.
Standard features appear to be similar to the GXR model with items such as a reversing camera, leather seats and paddle gear shifters, however the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton, Dato’ Lukman Ibrahim hinted the new model will offer more features.
"The Proton Suprima S Super Premium is Proton's most comprehensively equipped model in terms of performance, styling, safety, driving dynamics and sophistication," he said from the car's debut at the Proton Sales Carnival in Malacca, Malaysia.
"The new variant will open up the Suprima S to a specific market segment that would cater to customers who give priority to car specifications."
As with other Proton Suprima S hatchback models, the Super Premium R3 will be offered with five-year, 150,000km warranty, with roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty. It also has a five-star safety rating from Australian NCAP, thanks to six airbags, a reinforced safety cell, anti-lock brakes and stability control.
