Proton has announced its Preve GXR variant is joining the local Preve range, with a turbocharged engine and the performance to match.
As for the Preve GX, the turbocharged GXR drives through a continuously variable transmission with seven pre-set steps, but the upmarket model delivers a significant performance boost – 103kW and 205Nm – from the forced-induction version of the 1.6-litre Campro powerplant. Fuel consumption with the CVT is 8.6L/100km in combined-cycle testing. A six-speed manual variant will be added to the range in the first quarter of next year. Proton claims the range-topping Preve has the active safety to complement the added grunt – in the form of the Lotus-calibrated suspension, comprising MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link IRS system. Crash safety – rated at five stars by ANCAP – is aided by hot press forming and ultra-high-tensile strength steel during the production process.
Standard equipment comprises six airbags, front active headrests, stability control, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, multi-function steering wheel, trip computer, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, reversing sensors, cruise control and engine-start button. Alloy wheels, measuring 16 inches in diameter, comprise a 10-spoke design. Available colours include Solid White, Genetic Silver, Tranquility Black and Fire Red.
Price is $23,990, including on-road costs. For a limited period, Proton is offering a $1000 factory rebate, reducing the price to $22,990. The Preve GXR is covered by a five-year/150,000km warranty, with free servicing for the first 75,000km or five years, 24-hour roadside assist for the period of the warranty, and a seven-year anti-corrosion warranty.
