Victorian P-plate drivers in a quandary over what they can and can't drive would be wise to take a look at our comprehensive listing of compliant and non-compliant cars (see links below).
New restrictions on P-platers are aimed at preventing new licence holders from driving high-powered cars and, from July 2007, are based on a different set of rules to those that applied previously.
Where the previous system was broadly based on a calculation of power to weight ratios, the new system is more specific, banning all V8s and most turbocharged or supercharged cars, as well as those with modified engines.
The restrictions can still make it confusing to determine what is, and what isn't permissible for drivers who acquired their Victorian P-plates after June 30, 2007.
The list aims at demystifying the business of choosing a car, or even understanding the exceptions that can apply to a car already in the family garage but outside the normal P-plate parameters.
Also accompanying the P-plate listing is a guide to how other states and territories throughout the country treat newly licensed drivers. Uniformity is the exception, not the rule.
