Puffer jacket-wrapped Mercedes-Benz G-Class unveiled

If the idea of a 430kW ladder-frame 4x4 off-roader isn’t unhinged enough, Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler has unwrapped the Mercedes PROJECT MONDO G – a Mercedes-Benz G-Class that has a body inspired by its famed puffer jacket.

Created in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz as part of its London fashion week ‘The Art of Genius’ show, the creative inspiration behind the one-off Mercedes G-wagen is contracting its familiar straight-edged design with the soft, round design of the Moncler jacket.

It features huge quilted wheels, and the same soft furnishing is used on the roof and side panels, including a huge zip to presumably gain access to additional storage space.

More of a sculpture than a fully functioning vehicle, the oversized wheels look like they might be suited to arctic, snowy conditions, but it’s uncertain the PROJECT MONDO G is capable of forward motion, despite its snorkel air intake.

Weighing in at 2.5 tonnes and standing at 2.8m tall, 3.4m wide and measuring 4.6m in length, it’s interesting to note that beneath the puffer the G-Class appears to lack a pair of rear doors, hinting perhaps at a three-door or even a convertible version possibly in the works.

Commenting on the one-off Mercedes PROJECT MONDO G, Mercedes-Benz design boss Gorden Wagener said: “Two strong luxury brands offer an extraordinary new experience by combining automotive and fashion world united in one piece.

“Because of over-dimensional and exaggerated language of forms it’s polarising art to set new impulses and trends.”

Mercedes says the evidence of the collaboration between it and Moncler opens the door for future opportunities for both brands.
