Face the facts fellow Australian motorists: it will be some time before local versions of our vehicles come equipped with digital radio receivers -- either standard or as an affordable option.
Late last year BMW announced the option of a DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) tuner on all new models. Audi have also taken steps to increase digital radio as an option at a cost, but across the range of car brands available here, this won’t be common for a long while yet. Unlike in Europe and the USA, the broadcast of digital content is limited to metro regions in our wide land. So for city dwellers wanting crisp, clear, radio content in-car it is to third party suppliers we must turn.
That is where Pure is stepping in with the Pure Highway 300Di. At $499 this neat little unit can pump a digital signal into your existing car stereo, providing full control and playback of music stored on an iPod, iPhone, iPad or a USB device.
The Pure Highway 300Di comes with a compact interface box, for placement in a discrete location such as behind the dashboard or in the glove box. A removable controller unit featuring an OLED display and large controls allows all normal radio functions as well as the ability to pause and rewind the digital broadcast.
Conveniences include storage for 30 digital radio favourites, backlit buttons and ability to hook up (and charge) your other digital music equipment. The Pure Highway 300Di also has a neat little “ForeCourt” pause feature giving you 8 minutes to fill up with petrol or grab a snack from the milk bar and return to the car not missing any part of the show you were enjoying.
The Pure Highway 300Di will be available in selected Pioneer car audio specialist stores, and AutoXtrem -- a car dealership business that specialises in the supply and installation of the very latest, innovative in-car electronic products.
“We are delighted that the country’s leading car dealer option audio retailer will be making Highway 300Di available to its customers; this is an important step forward for the sales of in-car digital radio adapters and will be a significant catalyst in bringing the benefits of digital radio to the 32 per cent of radio listening that is done in the car in Australia,” says Graeme Redman, managing director of Pure Australia Pty Ltd.
