Priced at $222,545 the XFR-S is nearly $7000 cheaper than the BMW M5 and close to $18,000 less than the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG. The new Jag is the company's fastest sedan ever, and can knock over the zero to 100km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, which places it behind its two German rivals, but the XFR-S should reel them in once its speed tops 300km/h.
Jaguar has farmed out the development work for the XFR-S to its in-house tuning division, ETO, to tweak the standard XFR for even higher performance from its supercharged 5.0-litre petrol V8 and improved cornering from the upgraded suspension. Driveline components have been strengthened to handle the abundant grunt, and that in turn has allowed the engineers to calibrate the engine for optimal throttle response. Coupling the engine with the eight-speed ZF transmission, recalibrating the electronic active differential and stability control to match the exclusive Pirelli tyres on 20-inch 'Varuna' forged alloy wheels, produces a car that will "push the performance boundaries," in Jaguar's own words.
Wider by 10mm on all four corners, the Pirelli tyres measure 265/35 at the front and 295/30 at the rear. Keeping the tyres in constant contact with the road is a role that falls to the XFR-S' aerodynamically optimised body, which features lightweight panels formed from carbon fibre. These reduce lift by 68 per cent, the manufacturer claims.
Customers can choose from five exterior colours: French Racing Blue, Ultimate Black, Stratus Grey, Polaris White and Italian Racing Red. Inside the car the upholstery comprises Warm Charcoal leather for the seats and doors with embossed logos for the seats and a selection of three colours (red, blue or ivory) for the micro-piping and stitching.
"Sporting character is evident in all Jaguar saloons," says Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director for Jaguar. "In the XFR-S that character has been amplified, the result being a truly engaging car with a combination of technical innovation, assertive design and staggering performance that will satisfy the most demanding of drivers."
