Euro NCAP has rated the Qoros 3 ahead of Toyota's Corolla sedan in a surprise turn of events. In the latest round of testing, the crash safety authority not only arrived at the conclusion that the Chinese car was five-star safe, but that its combination of adult, child and pedestrian safety placed it narrowly ahead of the Corolla – 97 versus 94 per cent, 87 versus 82 per cent and 77 versus 67 per cent, respectively.
With a score of 81 per cent in the Safety Assist category, the Qoros finished well ahead of the Corolla. While the Chevy Trax (much the same car as the Holden Trax) matched the Qoros in the Safety Assist category, it was edged out in adult protection with a score of 94 per cent and child protection was a similar story, at 85 per cent. Posting a score of 64 per cent for pedestrian safety, the Trax, which is placed in the same 'small family car' category by Euro NCAP, was well behind the Qoros.
Furthermore, the Qoros was also a long way clear of Kia's Rondo, which was tested in the same round. As explained in the Rondo article, Euro NCAP has moved to a more stringent testing standard this year, which means that the high mark achieved by the Qoros is particularly significant. According to Quoros, the result places its small sedan ahead of all other cars tested by Euro NCAP on the basis of its aggregate score. "The safety of our vehicles was one of our key development goals from the start," said Volker Steinwascher, Vice Chairman of Qoros, as quoted in a press release.
"It’s a crucial demonstration that our customers are the most important consideration and it also says a great deal about the engineering integrity of the car as a whole. So, while we expected a very good result in the Euro NCAP test, we are naturally very happy with how the car performed. The Qoros engineering team invested an incredible amount of time and commitment in developing one of the safest vehicles ever assessed by Euro NCAP."
It's a far cry from six years ago, when another Chinese car – the Brilliance DS6 – failed to leave much of an impression in its Euro NCAP crash test. Read the latest news and reviews on your mobile, iPhone or PDA at carsales' mobile site...
