One of Australian sport’s most popular personalities and the first racing driver to be knighted for his services to motorsport, Sir Jack Brabham, will be honoured in a ballroom function on the Gold Coast in late October.
Described as the personification of the great Australian sportsman – relentless in competition, yet friendly, approachable and a genuinely good bloke – Sir Jack will be the guest of honour at the RACV-sponsored event to be held at the Royal Benowa Ballroom on Monday, October 22. Jack's amazing life
The Jack Brabham tribute dinner is expected to draw hundreds of motorsport enthusiasts as well as Sir Jack’s closest friends and family, including his three sons Geoff, David and Gary, all of whom have had successful racing careers.
Named a National Living Treasure by the National Trust of Australia earlier this year, Sir Jack was a multiple Formula One world champion between 1959 and 1966, and is the only person in the sport’s history to have won a championship driving a car of their own construction.
Now in his mid-80s, Sir Jack has been a resident of the RACV Royal Pines Resort since 2006. Resort general manager John Morris said that what was initially planned to be a small-scale celebration has grown into a major tribute, following enormous public interest.
A major display of Brabham memorabilia, some of which has not been seen for years, film footage and two cars raced by Sir Jack will be on display at the event.
Holding centre stage will be the Repco Brabham model BT7 A- in which Sir Jack won the 1964 Australian Grand Prix at Sandown, and the Repco Brabham Model BT11 A that he drove to second in the 1965 Australian Grand Prix at Longford in Tasmania.
Sir Jack’s inspiring life story includes twice winning the Formula One constructors championship, being named Australian of the Year in 1966, being awarded an OBE by the Queen in 1967, receiving a knighthood in 1979, and being made an officer of the Order of Australia in 2008.
Limited tickets are available through the RACV Royal Pines Resort – (07) 5597 8700.
