Rally rides up north
Queensland to stage Targa-style tarmac rallyA five-day tarmac rally will be staged in the Sunshine Coast hinterland next year. The inaugural SunCoast Classic, scheduled for July 4-8 2007, will be similar in format to events such as Targa Tasmania and Classic Adelaide.
Organisers Silverstone Events say the event will inject more than $3m a year into the Queensland economy and "is a major boost to the state's motorsport portfolio now that plans for the transfer of Australia's World Rally Championship round from Western Australia to Queensland will not be going ahead."
SunCoast Classic patron and entrant Sir Jack Brabham said at the launch: "As a Queensland resident I believe the roads, the weather and the locations are perfect for a classic tarmac rally and I am sure it will attract the world's best cars and drivers." Those expected to attend include F1 commentator Murray Walker, Le Mans 24 Hour winner Vern Schuppan and Peter Brock and organisers have received expressions of interest from factory teams such as Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes and Maserati.
According to Silverstone Events the rally has been designed to ensure minimal disruption to locals and with safety in mind. "The clerk of course Bob Carpenter has more than three decades of experience directing international rally events up to World Cup status," said Executive Chairman of Silverstone Events, David Edwards.
"He has specifically designed the SunCoast Classic to meet the demands and standards of the world governing body of motorsport, the FIA, as well as the people of the Sunshine Coast and its hinterland."
