If you thought the new RAM 1500 TRX super-ute's incendiary 500kW-plus Hellcat V8 was nuts, get a load of the Hennessey Mammoth.
The Texas-made towering behemoth rides on six wheels and comes with an eye-watering price tag of half a million US dollars (about $A678,000) to match its stretched body.
It’s fair to say this gargantuan pick-up truck will get more attention than a coronavirus cure.
But it gets better. Hennessey will ditch the RAM TRX's 522kW (702hp) 6.2-litre supercharged V8 for a 7.0-litre blown V8. And it’s called the Hellephant.
The 426 cubic-inch engine comes out of the crate with 745kW (1000hp) but Hennessey says it will modify the small-block V8 to pump out 895kW (1200hp).
Because really, when you’re cruising around in a 6X6 monster truck, you need to be able to spin four wheels at the drop of a hat, right?
Responsible for vehicles such as the 484km/h Venom F5 supercar and a 1000hp VE Holden Commodore, not to mention 6x6 versions of the Ford F-150 Raptor and Chevrolet Silverado, Hennessey will build just three examples of the unique off-roader.
The Texan auto shop has sold 15 Ford F-150 VelociRaptor 6X6 and Chevy Silverado Goliath 6X6 trucks to date and is confident it will sell all three Mammoths quick smart.
As well as the hefty engineering job required to stretch the rear tray, elongate the driveline and add another axle, the Hennessey Mammoth will get “fully upgraded off-road suspension, bespoke interior, upgraded front and rear bumpers with upgraded LED lights and more,” according to the official press release.
John Hennessey, the company founder and CEO, said “We are very excited about the Ram TRX” and agreed that the whole concept is a “…a completely ridiculous idea, which is exactly why we are doing this.”
There are a handful of 6X6 machines out there, including a Jeep Gladiator ute, Land Rover Defender wagon, Mercedes-AMG G-Wagon and even a Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute.
But none are quite as crazy as this ultra-rare RAM 1500 TRX-based colossus.
“We are only going to build three examples which will likely make this the most exclusive and most expensive truck we’ve ever built,” said Hennessey.
