If you thought Aussies were going troppo for utes at the moment, check out what’s happening in the USA.
The Launch Edition of the new RAM 1500 TRX, a Ford F-150 Raptor-slaying desert dueler powered by a blown big-bore V8 with an insane 500kW-plus power punch, has sold out in just three hours.
The entire 702-unit allocation of RAM 1500 TRX Launch Editions was snapped up by buyers eager to get the unique new super-ute, which is priced from $US90,315 or more than $US100,000 when optioned to the hilt.
To put that price in perspective, you can buy a brand-new Porsche 911 in American for $US99,200. The cheapest Porsche 911 in Australia costs $A236,300.
But does the Porsche 911 have an eagle mode that dials back the revs when the vehicle is airborne, or extreme wheel articulation, or an epic towing capacity? No, it does not.
The RAM 1500 TRX is a completely mad machine, able to accelerate to 100km/h in a class-leading 4.5 seconds thanks to a 522kW/881Nm supercharged 6.2-litre Hellcat V8, four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission with launch control.
For the record, we should point out that HSV's Maloo GTSR was pretty wild, but it only offered 435kW/740Nm -- and it wasn't a dual-cab 4x4 ute.
The TRX has a whopping 300mm of ground clearance and uses Bilstein Blackhawk E2 active shocker absorbers, allowing it to go almost anywhere off-road -- at speed.
A manually-locking Dana 60 rear axle, 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tyres and a premium cabin with SRT sport seats, a 19-speaker sound system and a flat-bottomed steering wheel are standard equipment.
Finished in Anvil Grey exterior paint, the 2021 RAM 1500 TRX Launch Edition gets extras like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, leather and suede heated/ventilated sports seats, special badges inside and out, unique decals and beadlock-capable wheels.
While the Launch Edition is sold out and unlikely to make it to Australia, the standard $US71K RAM TRX can be optioned to pretty much the same spec level and RAM has said it will build as many of the tough trucks as it can sell.
The question is, will Aussies pay circa-$200,000 for a supercharged RAM 1500? We’ll find out soon enough, with local conversion outfit SCD American Vehicles confirming it plans to sell the monster 190km/h RAM TRX here by Christmas.
The RAM 1500 is officially converted and sold here by RAM Trucks Australia, which is expected to offer the RAM 1500 range-topping TRX in 2021 as well.
It will be interesting to see if Australian buyers make a rush on the RAM TRX when it gets here. After all, Aussie car enthusiasts have form: the first 100 Toyota Supra sports cars sold out in just 22 minutes.
