Range Rover Evoque Convertible: Full details

'World's first luxury compact SUV convertible’ to arrive in Q3 2016 priced from $84K

Jaguar Land Rover has released local pricing and specifications for its first-ever drop-top and what it claims will be the world's first luxury compact SUV convertible, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible.

Due on sale in Australia in the third quarter of next year, the convertible Evoque will be available in SE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic derivatives, priced from $84,440 for the turbo-petrol Si4 SE.

Opt for the Ingenium turbo-diesel-powered Td4-180 SE Dynamic, and that price lifts to $84,835 plus on-roads.

The convertible's entry price dwarfs that of the regular (facelifted 16MY) Evoque five-door, which commences at $51,995 for the eD4 Pure 2WD diesel manual.

The three-door Evoque 'Coupe' line-up on which the soft-top is based tops out with the $80,605 Si4 HSE Dynamic petrol auto, but to mimic that trim level in the Evoque Convertible, you are up for a $92,015 spend — almost $12,000 extra.

Unlike five-door and coupe Evoque variants, it’s the HSE Dynamic in Td4-180 turbo-diesel form that is the most expensive, at $92,410.

Beyond the automatically-operated fabric roof, which stows in 18 seconds, raises in 21, and can be operated at speeds up to 50km/h, the Evoque Convertible also gains JLR’s next-generation infotainment system with 10.2-inch touch-screen, the removal of ‘hard’ buttons, door-to-door navigation and 3G connectivity.

Safety hasn’t been ignored either, with a deployable roll-over protection system springing into action within 90 milliseconds.

The "distinctive profile, with roof up or down" design offers seating for four adults and a small 251-litre boot (with the roof in place or stowed) augmented by a ski hatch.

The Evoque Convertible is the fifth member of the Range Rover family, and JLR says it has been engineered to meet the brand’s performance requirements both on-road and off, making it "the most capable all-terrain convertible in the world".

Land Rover’s Terrain Response drive modes, the availability of technologies such as wade sense and sizeable approach, departure and break-over angles of 19, 31 and 18.9 degrees respectively certainly back up that contention.

The now-familiar nine-speed automatic gearbox is standard in both petrol and diesel variants, the former producing 177kW/340Nm while the Ingenium generates 132kW but a muscular 430Nm.

The latter returns combined fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km, although a lower-output Ingenium variant to be available overseas consumes as little as 5.1L/100km. A choice of full-time or adaptive all-wheel drive systems is expected.

Key safety items such as lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking are also available, as is a 360-degree camera parking aid.

"Range Rover Evoque Convertible is a vehicle for all seasons. Its uniquely distinctive design and world-class engineering adds another dimension to the Range Rover family, further enhancing its desirability and appeal," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer.

Whether the price premium of the ground-breaking open-topped luxury SUV over the already-distinctive Evoque on which it is based will find a following Down Under remains to be seen.

2016 Range Rover Evoque Convertible pricing (plus ORCs):

Si4 SE Dynamic — $84,440
Td4-180 SE Dynamic – $84,835
Si4 HSE Dynamic — $92,015
Td4-180 HSE Dynamic — $92,410
