Range Rover plotting all-new model

"White space" between Evoque and Range Rover Sport to spawn new luxury SUV

Land Rover's luxury SUV brand, Range Rover, currently has a stable of three vehicles -- the mid-size Evoque, large Range Rover Sport and larger-still Range Rover flagship – but motoring.com.au has learned that a fourth model is in the wings.

Range Rover has recognised a gap in its line-up between the Evoque, which is priced from $49,990, and the Rangie Sport (from $90,600) both in terms of size and price. The Evoque currently tops out at $81,470 in three-door Si4 Prestige AWD form.

It's not clear how far into the development process the new model is, but a source at Land Rover says the company will target the growing number of loyal customers who don't want seven seats, but don't want a vehicle as small as the Evoque or as large as the Rangie Sport.

The answer? An all-new model positioned between the two, most likely based on the modified Evoque platform that also underpins the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

We posed the question to Land Rover's design director Gerry McGovern at the 2015 New York motor show today and he didn't deny the vehicle's existence.

"I've said there's lots of 'white space' opportunities for Range Rover... I don't need to confirm it," he smiled after looking to his PR minder for direction..

As PR staff attempted to shut down the line of questioning, noting that company policy dictates that "we don't talk about future product", we posed a final question: Is there customer demand for an all-new five-seat Range Rover SUV?

"Range Rover has a lot of equity because of product that's truly desirable, and you know with white space I think so," said McGovern.

As we were ushered out of the interview room, McGovern confirmed we'll see something new from Land Rover at the 2015 Frankfurt show in September -- although it's unlikely to be the new SUV in question, which by our reckoning is at least three years away.
