Range Rover Sport SVR faster than Ferrari on China's most dangerous road
Brit car-maker claims facelifted Rangie Sport SVR sets new record up Tianmen Mountain roadLand Rover has claimed its recently updated Range Rover Sport SVR has set a new record climb of China's Tianmen Mountain road.
The road, located in the Chinese Hunan Province, stretches over 11.3km and consists of 99 corners that snake and coil up an altitude of 1100 metres.
Setting a time of just nine minutes and 51 seconds, at an average speed of 68.8km/h, the 2018 Rangie SVR comprehensively beat the 10:31 time set by a Ferrari 458 Italia back in 2016.
Benefiting from 2018 model-year updates, the Range Rover Sport SVR that set the record came equipped with the more muscular 416kW (up 14kW) version of the firm's mighty supercharged 5.0-litre V8, allowing it to now hit 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.
That's still a long way off the performance offered by the 419kW Ferrari 458 Italia that, thanks to its lighter weight, can storm to 100km/h in less than three seconds.
Offsetting the considerable weight of the Range Rover, the Sport SVR was driven by professional Formula E racer and Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver, Ho-Pin Tung.
The original Ferrari record was set by Fabio Barone Mihaela, the president of the Italian car-maker's fan club.
Racer Tung was the same daredevil driver tasked with the recent Land Rover stunt that involved a Range Rover Sport, this time the plug-in hybrid P400e climbing the 999 steps to Heaven's Gate, which sits at the summit of the Tianmen Mountain road.
