Another super-rare VN Holden Commodore built by HSV is up for auction and is expected to fetch more than $500,000 once the bidding war ends this weekend.
This 1990 HSV VN SS Group A SV is build number 002 of just 302 race homologation specials produced at Holden’s plant in Elizabeth, South Australia, before being modified by HSV at its factory in Clayton, Victoria.
This batch is the very last of the Group A Holden homologation specials produced as a requirement for developing racing car versions that could then compete in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
The 002 now up for grabs follows build number 180 of the same model that sold for $300,000 in April this year.
That was in itself a record-breaking price, but with bids already at $306,000 at the time of writing, with four days to go, the 002 version is expected to push up to half a million dollars – and possibly well beyond.
According to Lloyds Auctions, the vehicle has had only two owners, with the current seller holding the keys of this particular 5.0-litre V8-powered VN SS since 1994.
There’s 36,358km on the odometer and the car is said to be in original condition – apart from an aftermarket exhaust and chip. It comes with original books, service history, two sets of keys and a certificate of authenticity from HSV.
Lloyds Auctions chief operating officer Lee Hames said its significance as a member of one of the last batches of ‘race cars for the road’ built in Australia means it is only available to verified bidders.
“We auctioned the same model back in April, which broke an Australian world record price, and we believe this one being build number 002 might just break it again based on the amount of enquiry we have had already,” said.
“This iconic car is a timepiece in Australian motor sporting history, and serious enthusiasts will need to be verified prior to bidding due to the important significance of this car.”
Meanwhile, a number of other special vehicles are up for grabs, including Kerry Packer’s 1977 Jaguar XJS and Glenn Seton’s 1997 championship-winning Ford Falcon EL.
Lloyds says those interested in build number 002 can bid in person or online here.
