Here is your chance to own a piece of Ferrari history. One of only five Ferrari 375-Plus models is going under the hammer at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, without a set reserve price!
However, don’t expect to come away with a bargain. Last year Bonhams, the auction house selling the prized Ferrari, sold Juan Manuel Fangio’s former Mercedes Benz W196 for a record setting £20 million.
Phillip Kantor, Bonhams Head of Motor Cars, noted that “it is very rare indeed for a Ferrari team works car with continuous history and undisputed identity to come to the market for sale by public auction.”
This particular 375-Plus was actually driven by Umberto Maglioli in the 1954 Mille Miglia, an Italian cross country endurance race, the Carrera PanAmericana, a five-day road race across Mexico, and the world famous Le Mans. It also went on to win at Silverstone in the same year, helmed by Jose Frolian Gonzalez.
The car then moved to the United States, where it was purchased by amateur racer and Kleenex heir, Jim Kimberly. The 375-Plus then saw races at Watkins Glen, Nassau, Sebring and even the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix.
The Ferrari eventually found its way back to Europe when it was purchased by a close friend of Enzo Ferrari himself, Jacques Swaters. Swaters then had the car moved to Modena, where it was fully restored.
“The car will be sold with a spare period works block engine and its original body panels, still bearing traces of the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix race colours,” according to the press release from Bonhams.
The 375-Plus still packs a punch, even by today’s standards, cramming a 4.9-litre V12 producing 243kW of power into a small, light-weight body.
So how about it, will you be flying to the UK in June, to place a bid on this classic from the annals of Ferrari racing history?
