Last week Carsales posed a question on its Facebook page that raised a raft of responses from our readership. Ranging from the reasonable to the ridiculous, the spread of answers and attitudes, whilst not surprising, shows the variety of mindsets drivers encounter every day.
The question asked was: If you could make one change to the current traffic laws, what would it be?
Sensible responses included those such as harsher penalties for drunk driving and mobile phone use or the reinstatement of a 10 per cent speed tolerance -- or higher when overtaking. Many readers also suggested that standardised road laws should be applied nationally or that we adopt a German-style network of autobahns between capital cities.
By far the most popular call was to raise the speed limit on the right-hand lane of freeways, a “fast lane” rule, if you will; closely followed by the call for better policing of the largely ignored ‘keep left unless overtaking’ rule.
In the middle of the road, if you’ll pardon the pun, were those that called for the blanket raising of speed limits on freeways. Younger drivers called for a revision to P plate regulations, bringing back the ‘power-to-weight’ system, while from left field were those who said we should ban all speed and red light cameras, make Australia left-hand drive.
Then there were the downright idiotic calls for the abolition of anti-hoon laws, removal of school zone speed limits, removal of lane markings, no speed limits and the banning of bikes.
