BMW has posted images of a new concept it is readying for this year’s Villa d’Este Concours classic car fest, which appears to be a shooting brake version of last year’s M8-based BMW Concept Skytop.
Looking like it will draw heavy influence from the wild Z3-based BMW M Coupe (1997 to 2002) and the Z4 Coupe that came later, the new show car is set to feature a reworked version of the BMW Concept Skytop’s rear body, mimicking the two-door coupe that is affectionately named the ‘Clown shoe’ on account of its unusual proportions.
The tease hints at how, instead of the Skytop’s rear deck, there will be a long rakish glasshouse with a ducktail-style roof spoiler.
It’s not the first time BMW has toyed with an M Coupe or Z3 Coupe revival. Back in 2023, the Bavarian car-maker made a one-off Touring Coupe based on its Z4.
While the Touring Coupe was never produced, BMW has already announced it will go ahead and produce a limited run of 50 BMW Skytop roadsters.
Like the Skytop, it’s thought the latest Z3 Coupe reboot will come with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8. Kicking out a mighty 460kW and 740Nm of torque, the output should see the two-door wagon sprint to 100km/h in around 3.0 seconds.
Details about the new concept – including its name – remain elusive, with more teases expected in the build-up to its May 24 unveiling at the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, to be held on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy.
During a recent interview, BMW M’s vice president for sales, Sylvia Neubauer, confirmed that the production Skytop convertible would be followed by more limited-production vehicles.
“BMW’s strategy is to have a number of small-series additions that we offer to the markets,” she said. “There will be something coming at Villa d’Este this year, and probably some future small-series editions with the ‘M’ designation.”
Stay tuned for more teases of the fast two-door BMW shooting brake in the build-up to this weekend’s reveal.
