Nissan's MD, Dan Thompson, expects the market to show slight improvement this year, over 2009. Last year's total was 937,000 vehicles approximately, but the company's forecast for the 2010 market is around 950,000 units.
"The fundamentals are very strong," says Thompson of the market prospects for this year, "low unemployment, low interest rates, low petrol prices... everything that fundamentally supports growth in automotive vehicles sales is there. It's coming back.
"The only reason probably the [950,000 figure] isn't greater than [that]... is that the first few months of the calendar year will be impacted by a bit of a hangover from the government stimulus in October, November, December.
"We think we're well on our way as an industry to get back to that million-unit mark by probably mid-point 2011."
As for Nissan itself, Thompson says that the company is on track to meet its targets in accordance with the strategic business plan, 'GT-2012'.
"Next year, we do have a bit of modest growth [forecast], but it's not until 2011 when we feel the full-year impact from all-new Micra and then the flow-on of a handful of products that we're going to start that journey up towards being the number one importer with 10 per cent market share.
