Toyota Australia has announced a nationwide recall that affects a total of 156,838 examples of its top-selling Toyota HiLux, relating to a trivial yet problematic issue.
Those models impacted include Toyota HiLux utes built between June 2015 and September 2021, with the fault relating to each vehicle’s licence plate bracket.
According to the Japanese car-maker, the genuine number plate bracket fitted to certain HiLux models could fall off the vehicle after being driven on rough or corrugated roads, due to insufficient stiffness of the bracket.
If it doesn’t completely dislodge, Toyota says the bracket could fracture, causing the number plate lamp wiring to become damaged, resulting in a loss of licence plate illumination.
Toyota Australia says affected models can be returned to a Toyota dealership for inspection, with replacement of the bracket, if needed, free of charge and said to take approximately 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, 324 examples of the Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 have been recalled due a problem identified with the wiring harness for the steering control unit.
Impacting models built between 2019 and 2021 – that is, since launch in Australia – the recall for Mercedes-Benz’s full-electric SUV relates to a manufacturing defect that could allow water or moisture to enter the wiring harness.
This, in turn, could cause a short circuit, resulting in a loss of electric power steering.

The German car-maker is also calling back 61 examples of the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (model years 2020-21).
In this case, side spoilers at the tailgate could be mounted incorrectly, meaning they could detach from the vehicle whilst it’s being driven.

A total of 993 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class models (2019-2020) have also been recalled over potentially faulty air-conditioning system drain hoses.
According to the notice, the drain hoses of the air-con system may have been incorrectly installed and condensation may leak into the vehicle interior and cause malfunctions in different electrical components.
This increases the risk of a short circuit, which could result in a vehicle fire.
The automatic emergency call (eCall) may also fail, while the vehicle’s lock/unlock and engine start functionality could also be impacted.
