Recall wrap: Brake trouble for all Mercedes-Benz X-Class utes
More than 6000 dual-cabs recalled, as new BMW X1 strikes seat belt woesAll 6117 examples of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute sold in Australia between early 2018 and mid-2020 have been recalled due to a potential brake problem.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear axle radial shaft ring may not be sealed adequately. This could cause an oil leak resulting in an unexpected reduction of braking performance,” said Mercedes-Benz Australia in its product safety recall notice, which you can read in full here.
“An unexpected reduction in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”
The Nissan Navara on which the X-Class was based is not affected by the recall and Mercedes-Benz Australia is urging all affected owners to contact their nearest authorised dealership to have rectification work carried out as soon as possible, free of charge.

Also this week, 833 examples of the third-generation BMW X1, which arrived Down Under in October 2022, were recalled due to a rear seat belt issue that could prevent them from fully protecting occupants.
“The outer seat belts in the second row may become jammed at the bottom of the trim panels. As a result, the seat belts may not operate as intended,” said BMW Australia in its recall notice.
“In the event of an accident if the seat belts do not operate as intended, the occupant of that seat may not receive the full protection of the seatbelt system and this could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants.”
Owners of affected vehicles (check if your VIN number is included here) are advised to immediately contact an authorised BMW dealer or BMW Australia to have the recall work completed free of charge.
