Recall wrap: Cupra Leon and Formentor could have loose radiators

Meantime, nearly 200 Bentley Continentals are being recalled due to a fire risk

Cupra Australia has issued a recall for 1439 examples of the Cupra Leon hatchback and Cupra Formentor SUV produced between 2021 and 2022, to rectify a manufacturing fault that could result in the radiator jiggling loose and in turn cause the engine to overheat.

According to the recall notice, the radiator may not have been attached properly and has the potential to move about the engine bay, spring a coolant leak and eventually lead to a cooked engine if low coolant level warnings are ignored.

“A loss of coolant will be indicated by visual and audible warnings for low coolant,” the notice reads.

“If the warnings are ignored by the driver, engine overheating and subsequent power loss can occur.”

An identical fault triggered the recalling of more than 1200 Mk8 Volkswagen Golfs – on which the Leon and Formentor are based – in November.

The timing of this latest recall comes as Cupra announces sub-four-week delivery wait on new petrol Formentor and Ateca orders, something brand executives are all too thrilled for given the current industry climate.

Meantime, Bentley has recalled 194 Continental GT coupes and convertibles produced between 2018 and 2019 to avoid a potential vehicle fire stemming from an electrical short.

The fire risk has been traced back to a design defect in the Conti’s water pump that could create a vacuum within the electrical area of the pump and cause coolant to “permeate the housing of the water pump and damage the electrical circuitry”.

A short could in turn spark a vehicle fire which obviously poses a significant risk to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders.

“In the event that the Engine Management Light illuminates, or smoke is detected, owners should stop the vehicle where it is safe to do so, turn off the ignition, evacuate the vehicle and contact your nearest retailer immediately,” Bentley said in a statement.

Affected owners are being urged to contact their authorised Bentley dealer and have the fault rectified free of charge.
