Luxury auto brand Mercedes-Benz has recalled more than 10,000 vehicles in recent weeks, spanning a range of passenger models plus its Sprinter commercial van and the discontinued X-Class dual-cab 4x4 ute.
Issued on Friday (January 7), the largest safety recall affects 8382 examples of the 2017-2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, G-Class, S-Class, GLE-Class and GLS-Class fitted with a diesel engine.
Both the 2.0-litre four-cylinder (codenamed OM654) and the 2.9-litre V6 (OM656) turbo-diesel engines used in the aforementioned models are to blame, with Benz saying a leak may develop between the coolant pump and vacuum circuit.
If coolant leaks and comes in contact with certain components, it could result in an increase in temperature and in turn, a vehicle fire. See below for more details.

A nationwide recall has been announced for the 2018-2019 Land Rover Discovery (L462) large SUV.
A total of 240 examples of the Disco have been recalled because the fuel feed hose assembly may have been incorrectly routed and could split as a result.
The fault, said to be caused by a manufacturing issue, could also cause fuel to leak into the engine bay, which could then result in an engine bay fire.

Just 10 examples of the Mercedes-Benz A 250e plug-in hybrid hatchback have been recalled due to a potential problem with the seal around the high-voltage battery housing.
Benz says the sealant used may reduce in performance and allow moisture to enter, potentially resulting in corrosion of the battery and a short circuit that could lead to a vehicle fire.

Another manufacturing fault that poses a potential fire risk has also led to the recall of 31 examples of the MY21 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (VS30) van.
Merc says a defect with the cable duct of the starter alternator wiring harness means it may become loose and damaged over time and could therefore lead to a short circuit.

Meanwhile, 2223 examples of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute built between 2018 and 2019 have been recalled.
According to the German car-maker, a manufacturing issue with the return line of the oil-cooler may cause it to become damaged and leak oil onto the road, increasing the risk of an accident.

The latest Skoda Fabia is also being recalled this month, with 16 examples of the Czech car-maker’s smallest model affected.
Skoda’s product safety recall notice said a manufacturing fault with the welding of the rear middle seat’s backrest frame could reduce the performance of the attached seat belt in MY21 Fabia vehicles.

More than 1300 examples of Australia’s top-selling vehicle, the Toyota HiLux, have also been recalled.
Toyota is calling back a total of 1367 HiLux vehicles – specifically SR and Workmate variants built in 2021 –
due to a faulty passenger seat occupant sensor.
“This sensor is used to detect if the seat is occupied and determine whether to deploy the passenger airbag in the event of an accident,” says Toyota’s recall notice.
“If the sensor does not operate as intended, it may result in an airbag not deploying when required’.
