BMW Australia has announced a nationwide product safety recall for more than 4000 vehicles dating back to 2009, spanning a range of models, including the BMW 3 Series sedan, X5 large SUV and Z4 sports car.
Of the 4205 vehicles involved in the recall, BMW says certain variants of the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 and Z4 are affected, all of which were built between 2009 and 2012.
The recall notice states the bolt connecting the variable camshaft timing unit to the engine may break, which could activate the limp-home mode safety feature.
It could also cause the engine warning light to illuminate and the vehicle to lose motive power, increasing the risk of an accident.
Owners of affected vehicles are being asked to immediately contact their local BMW dealer to have the issue rectified, free of charge.
Ford’s big new F-150 pick-up has also struck trouble, with concerns surrounding the electric parking brake on more than 100 examples of the full-size dual-cab 4x4 ute sold not by Ford, but locally converted to right-hand drive by Vehicle Development Corporation in Victoria.
The 114 examples affected in the recall were built between 2020-2023, with a manufacturing issue being the cause of the potential fault.
“The electric parking brake wiring harness may contact and chafe against the rear axle housing,” said VDC in its safety notice.
It said this could lead to an unintentional parking brake application while driving, resulting in a loss of vehicle control.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact their place of purchase to have the issue rectified.
Meantime, Ford Australia is recalling a total of 1559 Transit vans built between 2021-2023.
The safety concern relates to the reversing camera image on affected vehicles, which Ford Australia says may not display as intended while reversing.
Ford says it will contact affected owners in writing to organise free inspection and repair. You can see the safety recall notice here.
The all-new Nissan Z sports car is also being called back to the workshop this month too, with 135 examples of the two-door coupe potentially getting around with a few screws loose.
All variants of the new Nissan Z (Z34 series) built between 2022-2023 are being recalled due to a manufacturing issue, with the Japanese car-maker saying the mounting screws on the left-hand side front bumper reinforcement bracket may not have been tightened sufficiently.
As a result, the pedestrian detection sensor may not function as intended, says Nissan in its recall notice, which means the pedestrian-protecting pop-up bonnet function may not operate as intended in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of injury or death to pedestrians.
