Recall wrap: Fire risk for BMW X5 hybrid

Software issues for BMW X3 and X4 too, as Hyundai recalls some examples of its MY21 Santa Fe

BMW Australia has announced a nationwide recall for 2020-built examples of the popular BMW X5 large luxury SUV.

The safety notice affects just 20 examples of the Bavarian car-maker’s X5 xDrive45e, which is the only X5 variant fitted with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

BMW cites a manufacturing defect as the reason for the recall of the hybrid X5, which is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor producing a maximum power output of 290kW.

According to the safety notice, “the battery does not meet specifications and may experience an electrical short circuit when fully charged, which could result in a fire”.

BMW says owners of affected models should return their vehicle to a dealership with “the state of charge as low as possible” and is asking drivers not to charge the vehicle via a cable or use the manual gearshift mechanism, the sport shift on the selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW X3, X4 and 5 Series

Separately, BMW has recalled a total of 107 examples of its X3 and X4 mid-size SUVs, as well as the 5 Series large sedan.

Affected vehicles are all built between 2016 and 2020, and BMW says a software update issue may lead to an engine failure while driving and a red Check Control message “Drive faulty” may also appear on the instrument cluster.

This could result in a sudden loss of engine power, says BMW.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Meanwhile, Hyundai has recalled 19 examples of its MY21 Santa Fe (model code TM), all of which are fitted with the brand’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

According to the recall notice, the vehicle’s LCD instrument cluster screen may show an inverted image as a result of voltage fluctuations when operating at extremely low ambient temperatures, due to a discrepancy with internal resistors.

Replacement of the cluster and a software update – free of charge – will correct the issue, says Hyundai.
