Recall wrap: Fire risk for hundreds of Mercedes-Benz cars

German manufacturer announces nationwide safety recalls for A-Class, C-Class, S-Class and more

Mercedes-Benz has recalled several of its models this week, including close to 900 examples of the popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

A total of 887 examples of the previous-generation 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class are being urgently called back to dealerships due to a fire risk.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, an electrical wire may have been routed incorrectly in the engine compartment causing damage to its insulation and resulting in a short circuit,” said Mercedes-Benz in its safety recall notice.

“A short circuit may cause a fire and could increase the risk of an accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

Owners of affected vehicles are being asked to contact their most convenient Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible at no cost.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

At the same time, the German car-maker has recalled just two examples of the MY20 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.

According to Merc, the electrical connection for the airbag crash sensor may not be secured correctly and vibrations when driving could cause it to detach.

“If the crash sensor connection became detached, the effectiveness of the occupant restraint systems may be reduced, delayed or not deploy if involved in a front-end collision increasing the risk of serious injury or death,” said the company.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine has also been recalled, with 22 examples of the 2021 S 450 called back over potential rear airbag issues.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the wiring of the rear left and right airbags may have been reversed. Attempted deactivation of a side airbag may result in the opposite side airbag being deactivated and the intended airbag remaining operational,” said Benz.

This increases the risk of injury or death, particularly if the airbag inflates with a child seat in use.

Mercedes-Benz A-, C-, GLE-, GLC-Class and GT

Also this week, Mercedes-Benz has recalled 13 vehicles – including A-Class, C-Class, GLE-Class, GLC-Class and AMG GT cars, all manufactured between 2019 and 2020 – due to a separate fire risk.

According to the safety notice, particles may have been trapped between the fuel rail and injectors, damaging the seal and causing fuel to leak into the engine compartment, increasing the risk of fire.

Affected owners are again asked to contact their most convenient dealer to have free repairs carried out ASAP.

Mercedes-Benz Vito, V-Class

Seven examples of the Mercedes-Benz Vito and V-Class van range have also been recalled this week, with affected vehicles all built in 2021.

The three-pointed star brand says due to a hardware issue with the airbag control unit, the airbags may become deactivated.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class and EQA

Finally this week, three examples of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and its electric sister model, the EQA, have been recalled due to potentially loose brake calliper bolts.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, the brake caliper bolts may not have been tightened sufficiently and could get loose. If this occurs it may reduce the expected braking performance,” said Benz in its recall notice.

“A reduction or loss in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

The three vehicles are 2020 or 2021 models and owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible free of charge.
