A total of 13,548 examples of the previous-generation (TL) Hyundai Tucson and the discontinued Hyundai Veloster (FS) built between 2014 and 2017 have been hit with a product safety recall due to a potential engine fire.

The problem relates to a manufacturing defect that could cause the connecting rod bearing in the Tucson’s 2.0-litre petrol engine and the Veloster’s 1.6-litre engine to fail prematurely, leading to engine damage.

“If this occurs, engine oil may leak in the presence of an ignition source resulting in a vehicle fire,” said Hyundai’s recall notice.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property.

“If the vehicle’s engine exhibits an unusual noise or generates smoke, or if your vehicle’s instrument cluster displays an engine warning light, drivers should stop the vehicle where is safe to do so, turn off the ignition, evacuate the vehicle and contact their nearest Hyundai dealer immediately.”

Toyota Yaris

Also recalled since our last recall wrap a week or so ago is the current-generation Toyota Yaris (including hybrid versions) produced between 2020 and 2023 due to the risk of front suspension failure.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, small cracks may form in the front lower suspension arms when driving on rough (corrugated) roads,” says Toyota’s recall notice.

“As a result, the suspension may collapse or detach from the vehicle. If this occurs, the vehicle may experience a sudden loss of steering control.

“A loss of steering control could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

A total of 7633 examples of Toyota’s smallest model are involved, including the Ascent Sport 1.5L Petrol Auto Hatch, Ascent Sport 1.5L Petrol Manual Hatch, Hybrid Ascent Sport 1.5L Auto Hatch, Hybrid SX 1.5L Auto Hatch, Hybrid ZR 1.5L Auto Hatch, SX 1.5L Petrol Auto Hatch and ZR 1.5L Petrol Auto Hatch.

Toyota says it will contact affected owners in writing, requesting them to make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer to inspect and if necessary replace the front lower suspension arm, free of charge.

Genesis GV60, GV70, G80 and GV80

Meanwhile 1723 examples of the Genesis GV60, GV70, G80 and GV80 built between 2019 and 2023 have been recalled to fix a Takata-style seatbelt problem that could lead to occupant injury.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator cap may fracture when deployed in the event of an accident,” says Hyundai Motor Company’s recall notice.

“If the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator cap fractures, metal fragments may be propelled at high speed towards the vehicle occupants and could cause serious injury.”

Genesis Motor Australia (GMA) says it will contact affected owners directly, requesting they make an appointment with their preferred authorised GMA dealership for inspection and repair, free of charge.

Ford Endura

The short-lived 2018 Ford Endura has also been recalled in the past week, due to potentially leaky front brake lines.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, brake fluid may leak from the front brake flexible hoses. This could cause the brake fluid warning light to illuminate and may result in reduced braking efficiency,” said Ford.

“Reduced brake efficiency could increase the risk of an accident and injury or death to vehicle occupants or other road users.”

Ford says it will contact the owners of 1811 affected vehicles to request they make an appointment at their preferred Ford dealer for inspection and repair, free of charge.

Ford Ranger and Everest

Also hit with a product safety recall in the past week were 110 examples of the previous-generation Ford Ranger and Everest built between 2021 and 2022 and fitted with an ARB/WARN VR Evo winch.

“The internal circuit board of the remote control for ARB/WARN VR EVO winches can corrode if exposed to water. Corrosion of the remote control’s circuit board may cause the winch’s cable to stop, wind up or release unexpectedly,” says Ford’s recall notice.

“If a winch stops or starts unexpectedly while being used, the cable or vehicle may move suddenly. The winch may also operate unintentionally while not being used, for example when parked or driving.

“If the winch operates unexpectedly, there is an increased risk of accident and serious injury to occupants of the vehicles or persons nearby.”

Ford says owners of affected vehicles should immediately stop using the winch’s remote control unit and that it will contact them in writing, requesting they make an appointment at their preferred Ford dealer for the repair of the remote control, free of charge.
