Recall wrap: GM recalls over 700,000 vehicles worldwide

Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Yukon set to be recalled in Oz as major V8 engine fault surfaces

General Motors has recalled more than 700,000 vehicles globally, following manufacturing issues with the popular V8 engine found in cars like the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up and Yukon SUV, built between 2021 and 2024.

The 6.2-litre ‘L87’ V8 in question is also found in US models like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, and Cadillac Escalade, with the voluntary recall said to remedy catastrophic engine failures caused by defective parts, specifically the crankshaft and connecting rod.

There are now talks of legal proceedings in the US, following reports the automaker knew of problems with its 6.2-litre V8 years before it issued an official recall, with several customer complaints dating back to 2022.

A series of improvements means 2025 model year vehicles sold or bound for Australia are not affected, including the Yukon Denali large SUV and Silverado pick-up.

A spokesperson for GM locally told carsales: “A series of crankshaft and connecting rod manufacturing improvements implemented on or before June 1, 2024, addressed contamination and quality issues. Model year 2025 vehicles were built after these improvements and are not included in the recall.”

The brand’s local arm is yet to release an official recall notice for vehicles sold in Australia, such as the Silverado 1500 ute.

BMW X3, 520i

BMW X3

A potential fire risk has been noted for 273 examples of the BMW 520i and popular X3 small SUV built between 2024 and 2025.

The Bavarian car-maker says a manufacturing defect, where an electrical connection within the vehicle’s starter generator may not have been assembled to specifications, could cause a sudden loss of power whilst driving.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.

Chery Tiggo 4

Chery Tiggo 4

In other news, 1923 examples of the 2024-built Chery Tiggo 4 SUV are being called back to workshops, due to a software issue that affects the vehicle’s braking system.

“The vehicle may not have the Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) sound alarm activated,” says the Chinese manufacturer, meaning affected vehicles are not compliant with Australian Design Rule 98/01 – Advanced Emergency Braking for Passenger Vehicles and Light Goods Vehicles.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.

Ford Escape PHEV

A total of 480 examples of the plug-in hybrid Ford Escape are also in the recall wrap mix, due to a manufacturing defect that could involve one or more cells within its high-voltage battery.

Ford says the defect/s could cause an internal short circuit leading to a loss of motive power whilst driving, with owners said to be alerted by a ‘Stop Safely Now’ message in the instrument cluster if a loss of motive power occurs.

“The vehicle may also experience battery thermal venting, potentially resulting in a vehicle fire,” says Ford.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.

Genesis G80, GV70, GV80

Genesis GV70

Meanwhile, 138 Genesis vehicles are being recalled due to a software issue that affects 2023 to 2024-built versions of the G70 sedan, and GV70/GV80 SUVs.

“The instrument panel cluster may fail to display the visual seat belt warnings, vehicle speed, fuel level, engine status and other critical safety information,” says the Korean car-maker in its recall notice, which contains a full list of affected VINs.

Mazda BT-50

Mazda BT-50

A total of 912 Mazda BT-50 utes built in 2024 (TF model code) have been recalled, with all variants said to be affected by the same manufacturing defect, which could see the left leaf spring bracket insufficiently welded to the vehicle.

As a result, it “could crack resulting in a loss of vehicle control”.

Mazda says it will contact affected owners once a remedy is available, promising a fix free of charge.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi has recalled 7489 examples of its Outlander Exceed and Exceed Tourer (2022 to 2023) over potentially defective steering wheel touch sensors.

“As a result, the vehicle may not accurately detect the driver’s hands on the steering wheel and the MI-PILOT system may not operate as intended,” states Mitsubishi in its recall notice.

The Japanese brand advises owners of affected models not to use the MI-PILOT feature until the steering wheel has been replaced (by their preferred Mitsubishi dealer, free of charge).

A full list of affected VINs can be found here.

Nissan Qashqai

Nissan Qashqai

Nissan has recalled more than 11,000 examples of its Qashqai small SUV, including 11,107 units built in between 2022 and 2024 with internal combustion engines (ICE).

A further 380 examples of the Qashqai e-POWER (built in 2023) are also being recalled separately, over the incorrect calibration of the Battery Management System (BMS) software.

Nissan says the calculated battery state of charge may rapidly fluctuate, causing the vehicle to activate limp-home mode, potentially resulting in a loss of motive power while driving and an inability to restart the engine.

For ICE variants, a manufacturing defect means the wiring harness near the 12-volt battery may have been incorrectly assembled, and, as a result, the harness retaining nut could become loose and increase electrical resistance, which may lead to a vehicle fire.

In both cases, Nissan Australia will carry out repairs, free of charge.

A full list of affected VINs for ICE-powered Qashqai models and the Qashqai e-POWER can be found at each corresponding recall notice here and here, respectively.

SsangYong Musso, Rexton

SsangYong Rexton

More than 15,000 examples of the SsangYong Musso and Rexton (2020 to 2024) have also been recalled, because they could experience a sudden loss of power whilst driving.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, under certain driving conditions the engine cooling fan fuse may fail. As a result, the engine may overheat, leading to a sudden loss of motive power whilst driving,” says SsangYong in its recall notice, which is where you’ll find a full list of affected VINs.

Toyota Prado and Lexus GX

Toyota LandCruiser Prado

In other news, the related Toyota Prado (GDJ251R) and Lexus GX 550 (VJA252R) SUVs have also been recalled, with all variants of both models built in 2024 affected.

A total of 524 Prados are involved, along with just 28 examples of its more luxe Lexus GX sibling.

The following fault affects both vehicles: “Due to an error in the fitting instructions for the optional accessory Electric Brake Controller, the Lower Driver’s Airbag Assembly (removed during accessory fitment) may have been reinstalled using the incorrect torque. As a result, the lower driver’s airbag may not deploy as intended,” states the recall notice.

According to both manufacturers, the airbag not deploying as intended could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants.

A full list of affected Toyota VINs and Lexus VINs can be found attached to the recall notices for both the Toyota and Lexus.

Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen T-Roc

As many as 359 owners of the Volkswagen T-Roc small SUV (built between 2024 and 2025) could be dazzling oncoming drivers with their LED Matrix HD headlights, which the German car maker says may have been incorrectly adjusted from the factory.

VW will rectify the issue for owners free of charge.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.

Volvo S60, V60, XC60, XC90

Volvo XC90

A range of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles from Volvo have also been recalled, affecting a total of 195 Volvo S60, V60, XC60 and XC90 units built between 2019 and 2021.

According to the Swedish brand, the cell modules in the high-voltage battery could be defective, which could lead to a thermal overload, followed by a fire, when the vehicle is parked with a fully charged battery.

A full list of affected VINs can be found attached to the recall notice.
