Recall wrap: More than 10,000 Kia Carnivals could have faulty doors

And nearly 3000 compact Peugeots and Citroens have been recalled to replace a timing belt

Kia Australia has issued a product safety recall more than 10,000 examples of the current, fourth-generation Kia Carnival people-mover released Down Under in early 2021 and produced between 2020 and 2023 to rectify a potential fault with the powered sliding rear doors, which may not warn occupants of their activation.

Powered rear doors are only available on the penultimate SLi and flagship Platinum grades – which account for the bulk of Australian Carnival sales – and Kia says their potentially faulty activation warning poses a serious risk of injury to occupants, especially children.

Usually, the system emits a loud beeping noise to let the driver and passenger(s) know the door is either opening or closing.

Kia says the fault stems from a software glitch and is urging all owners of the 10,046 affected vehicles to contact their preferred dealer to arrange a complimentary software upgrade “immediately”.

Go to the federal government’s Vehicle Recalls website to see the recall notice and check whether your vehicle is involved.

Meantime, Australian Peugeot and Citroen distributor Inchcape has recalled 2212 examples of the Peugeot 308, 208 and 2008, as well 632 examples of the Citroen C3 Aircross, C3 and C4 Cactus (all produced between 2017 and 2020) to replace a timing belt that “may degrade due to aged engine oil”.

All of the affected models shared the same small-capacity petrol powertrain but, curiously, Inchcape says that “If [the timing belt is] left unrepaired it may result in a reduction or a loss of braking performance”.

“A reduction or loss in braking performance could increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users,” said the recall notice.

Both French brands are encouraging all affected owners to approach their preferred dealer to arrange a free repair.
