Recall wrap: New Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 hit by steering fault

Plus: Tesla Model 3 recalled to fix compliance breach that forced stop-sale of popular EV

Every example of the Mazda CX-60 and Mazda CX-90 sold in Australia since the all-new SUVs were launched last year has been recalled to rectify a manufacturing defect in the power steering assembly.

Impacting 5257 vehicles across both model lines, Mazda says in its recall notice that the gear set within the assembly may not operate as intended and cause unexpectedly heavy steering while on the move.

“An unexpected increased effort in power steering whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users,” the company said in the recall notice.

The notice was published this week on the federal government’s Vehicle Recalls database, where Mazda said it would contact affected owners in writing “when parts are available” and ask them to present their vehicles for a free inspection and repair.

Owners can check their vehicle’s inclusion in the recall via the VIN list attached to the notice.

Tesla has also issued a recall notice for 505 examples of its new Tesla Model 3 electric sedan to rectify an Australian Design Rule (ADR) breach relating to the centre top-tether strap point for securing child restraints.

As carsales has reported, the non-compliance with the relevant ADR forced a stop-sale for the heavily updated new Model 3.

Customer anecdotes posted to social media suggest a new parcel shelf will be installed, sourced from a third-party supplier.

“The defective parcel tray is removed and replaced with a new parcel tray with an anchor slot and cover minus an anchor logo,” said a member of the Tesla Model 3 & Y Australia Facebook group.

“Work is performed by a solo man so may take a few weeks until your car is assigned.”

Tesla said it’s contacting affected owners to schedule a service appointment to carry out a “part replacement” and has urged customers not to fit any child restraint in the rear-centre seat until the new part is installed.

As with the Mazda recall, affected owners can confirm their vehicle’s inclusion via a dedicated document listing the applicable VINs.
