Recall wrap: Potential engine failure for 2.0-litre Kia Seltos

Kia Seltos hit by dodgy piston rings while Mercedes-Benz recalls its plug-in hybrid GLC and a handful of Sprinters

Kia Australia is recalling 4647 examples of the Kia Seltos built between 2019 and 2020 to replace potentially damaged piston rings that could lead to total engine failure.

The recall is only for 2.0-litre front-wheel drive variants – not 1.6-litre turbo versions – of the popular small SUV, in which Kia says the piston rings “may not meet manufacturing specifications”.

Stalling while underway is another possibility if the engine doesn’t fail completely, but either event could increase the risk of an accident and serious injuries or death for vehicle occupants and other road users.

Kia is therefore asking affected owners to contact their nearest or preferred dealership to schedule a free engine inspection and replacement if required.

“During this inspection, an Engine Control Unit update will be applied to the vehicle as an additional data monitoring tool to detect early signs of engine failure,” said Kia.

Mercedes-Bez GLC 300e and Sprinter

Mercedes-Benz issued another coupe of recalls this week, this time involving several hundred examples of its electrified GLC 300e mid-size SUV and a handful of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.

The GLC’s call-back revolves around a potential transmission wiring route error in 492 vehicles produced between 2020 and 2022, which could cause a short on the front drive shaft.

If this happens, Mercedes says it could cause an “unexpected loss of traction”, which obviously carries some major risks to vehicle occupants, other motorists and bystanders.

“Owners of affected vehicles can contact their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible free of charge,” said the German brand.

“Alternatively, consumers may use the Mercedes-Benz online booking service, by visiting www.mercedes-benz.com.au.”

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

The same goes for five 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans that could have a loose torsion bar in their front suspension.

According to Mercedes, the bar may not have been attached to the relevant linkage as per specifications and could result in a loss of vehicle stability.
