Recall wrap: Potential engine failure for 5000 Kia vehicles

Neglected Kia engines could fail; Nissan Navara recalled due to winch woes

Keeping up with regular service and maintenance schedules is vital in keeping your car running in tip-top condition, but it’s now a matter of engine life-or-death for more than 5000 Kia owners.

Kia has announced a nationwide product safety recall for a total of 5069 petrol-powered Kia vehicles, all built between 2011-2015, including the Sportage (SL-series) and Sorento (XM) SUVs, and the Cerato (YD) small car.

All examples involved in the recall are fitted with a petrol engine, which Kia says may exhibit abnormal noise and potentially seize if continuously operated without inspection.

“This may cause a sudden loss of motive power and/or vehicle fire,” said Kia in its recall notice.

Affected owners are asked to contact their preferred Kia dealer to have the engine inspected and, if required, replaced free of charge.

Nissan Navara

Nissan Australia is calling back a total of 210 examples of its popular dual-cab ute, including all Nissan Navara variants built between 2021-2023 and fitted with a winch.

The Japanese car-maker says the internal circuit board of the winch remote control unit could corrode if exposed to water.

“If corrosion of the circuit board occurs, the winch can cause the cable to stop, wind up or release unexpectedly. The winch may also operate unintentionally while not being used, for example when parked or driving,” said Nissan in its recall notice.

Nissan says owners should immediately stop using the remote control unit and contact their local Nissan dealership to have their winch remote control and receiver replaced with an improved unit.

If an aftermarket winch is fitted, Nissan says consumers should contact their place of purchase or Ateco Equipment.

Meantime, 35 examples of the MY22 Polestar 2 electric fastback are being called back over a potential manufacturing defect.

The EV-maker says the left front suspension ball joint may have been incorrectly attached during manufacturing, which could result in a loss of vehicle control, therefore increasing the risk of accident.

Affected owners can contact their nearest Polestar dealer to organise free repairs.
