Recall wrap: Subaru WRX STI strikes trouble

Subaru STI recalled over reversing problem as seat belt issue impacts Jaguar and Land Rover models

More than 5700 Subaru WRX STI cars are being called back to the workshop due to potential faults with the high-performance model when reversing.

According to Subaru Australia, a total of 5702 examples of the potent WRX STI are affected, spanning model years 2015-2021.

The fault is said to be caused by a chemical reaction between hot transmission fluid and the vehicle’s back lamp switch terminal.

This could prevent the reversing lamps from illuminating on affected vehicles, and the reversing camera failing to operate as intended.

The recall notice said: “If the reverse lamps and the rear-view reverse camera do not operate as intended, it could increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to persons located behind the vehicle and/or other road users.”

Subaru will rectify the issue at any authorised dealer in Australia at no charge to owners.

Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Australia has recalled a small number of vehicles (14) including 2022-built examples of the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car, F-PACE SUV and the British car-maker’s only two sedan offerings, the XE and XF.

JLR says that due to a manufacturing defect, a damaged front seat belt pre-tensioner tube may have been installed on the seat belt retractor.

As a result, the pre-tensioner may not operate as intended.

At the same time, 216 examples of the Jaguar F-PACE have also been recalled over a separate issue with the rear indicators.

Again, a manufacturing issue is to blame, with Jaguar saying the rear turn indicators may not illuminate correctly, which could lead to other road users being unable to identify if the vehicle is turning.

A total of 350 SUVs spanning five models from Land Rover have also been recalled this week over the same seat belt pre-tensioner issue affecting multiple Jaguar models (as described above).

A damaged front pre-tensioner may have been fitted to several models, including the Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar, all of which were built between 2021 and 2022.

JLR will contact affected owners to organise repairs, where required, for no cost.
