Recall wrap: Toyota recalls 45,683 vehicles over faulty fuel pump

Popular Toyota and Lexus models affected by the latest round of industry safety recalls

Toyota has issued a safety recall notice for some of its most popular models in Australia over concerns they may suddenly lose power because of a faulty fuel pump.

A total of 45,683 vehicles have been recalled in a notice posted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), including the Toyota Camry (GSV70), Toyota Corolla (ZRE172), Toyota FJ Cruiser (GSJ15), Toyota Kluger (GSU50 and GSU55), Toyota HiLux (TGN121), Toyota Prado (GRJ150) and Toyota LandCruiser (URJ202).

Toyota says affected vehicles were sold between October 11, 2013 and April 3, 2020. Two-thirds of the vehicles identified in the recall comprise HiLux (10,771 vehicles) and Kluger (22,982 vehicles) variants.

Toyota warns the fuel pump on affected vehicles may stop operating, causing the vehicle to suddenly lose power and increase the risk of a crash.

“If the fuel pump stops working, warning lights and messages may display on the instrument panel, and the engine may not run smoothly. This can result in the vehicle stalling and the vehicle may not be able to be restarted,” Toyota said in the recall notice.

Toyota will contact affected owners in writing. Officials say parts required for repair are expected to become “available progressively” from June 2020. For further information, consumers should contact the Toyota Recall Assist helpline on 1800 987 366 (Monday to Friday, 8am - 6pm AEDT).

Separately, Lexus Australia has issued a recall notice for 6610 vehicles nationally for the same fuel pump issue.

The recall affects certain variants of the following models sold in Australia between 2013 and 2019: Lexus IS-F (USE20), Lexus LX (URJ201), Lexus IS (ASE30 and GSE31), Lexus GS (ARL10, GRL10/11/12 and GWL10), Lexus LS (USF40, GVF50, VXFA50 and UVF4#), Lexus NX (AGZ1#), Lexus RC (ASC10 and GSC10), Lexus LC (GWZ100 and URZ100) and Lexus RX (GGL2# and GYL2#).

Like Toyota, Lexus will contact affected owners in writing and says necessary parts will become available progressively from June 2020. For further information, consumers can contact their preferred Lexus dealer or contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009 (Monday to Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm AEST).

Elsewhere, Renault has recalled thousands of Clio models in separate notices.

A total 5881 Renault Clio IV MY2014-2015 are swept up in one recall notice where Renault says the linkage between the front windscreen wipers and the motor may not have been secured in accordance with required specifications.

“If the front windscreen wipers fail, in the event of rain the driver's vision may be obscured. This will increase the risk of an accident and injury to the vehicle occupants and other road users,” Renault says.

Separately, 255 Renault Clio IV Model Year 2016 examples have been recalled because the rear axle bolts may not have been tightened in accordance with the required specifications.

“If the rear axle becomes loose, the roadholding of the vehicle may worsen, which will increase the risk of an accident and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users,” Renault says.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified of the respective recalls and asked to contact a Renault dealer to arrange for inspection and repair of their vehicle, if necessary.
