A 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT fetched a record $546,250 at the Mossgreen Collectors Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia Auction at Melbourne’s Lorbek Luxury Cars showroom on November 27 — the highest-ever figure recorded for a Dino in Australia.
The “stunning” Berlinetta Coupe headed an all-star cast at what rated as the most successful classic car auction, in terms of dollar value, for the Southern Hemisphere in 2016.
“We are thrilled to set a new Australian auction record for the Ferrari Dino 246 GT,” said Robert Richards, head of Collectors' Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia at Mossgreen.
Second in dollar value to the Ferrari Dino was an Australian race car legend, the 1957 Molina Monza powered by a supercharged Holden 'grey' engine that went under the hammer for $241,500.
It was followed closely with an auction price of $218,500 by a 1938 Pininfarina Lancia Astura Cabriolet, then by a Brooklands-pedigreed 1934 Lagonda M45 Rapide which sold for exactly the same $218,500.
Another Ferrari Dino, this time a later-generation 1976 308 GT4, brought $110,400, while other Lancias in the top 10 included a 1963 Flaminia 2.8 Gran Touring Coupa ($192,625) and a 1991 Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione 1 ($73,600).
