Refresh for Volvo S80

Flagship sedan enters 2010 with a new diesel, across the range AWD and a classier interior

Volvo feels its S80 flagship has the goods to make a strong fist of competing at the lower end of the luxury segment, following the release of an upgraded model range featuring a new diesel engine, standard all-wheel drive across the range and a swathe of interior revisions.

The 151kW twin-turbo diesel seen elsewhere in the Volvo lineup joins the growing band of high-tech, high-power diesels where strong performance, refinement and low emissions complement the usual fuel consumption advantages.

Like the petrol inline six-cylinder and V8 models, the five-cylinder turbodiesel gets Volvo's Haldex-clutch all-wheel drive to enhance on-road stability in not-so-pleasant conditions.

The top of the range petrol V8 version now embraces Volvo's Lane Departure Warning with Driver Alert Control, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning and Auto Brake functionality as standard.

Interior upgrades include things like classy inlays on the steering wheel and shift lever, as well as aluminium inlays on the signature "floating" centre console.

There's a bit more chrome, as well as new switches for the power windows and illuminated interior door handles to make passengers feel a little bit special.

The SatNav system -- optional on T6 and D5, standard on V8 -- has also been upgraded with clearer graphics.

Outside the 2010 S80 isn't entirely forgotten, with a bolder grille (including a larger logo) inspired by the XC60 SUV.

Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Volvo's Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), seatbelt pre-tensioners for all seats, front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, curtain airbags and emergency flashing brake lights are all standard on all S80s.

The R-Design S80 now comes as a distinct model and adds unique 18-inch wheels, lowered, sports-tuned suspension and styling embellishments including a colour-matched rear spoiler, matt silver grille and exterior mirrors, and chrome exhaust pipes.

2010 Volvo S80 recommended retail pricing:

- Volvo S80 D5  $79,950
- Volvo S80 D5 R-Design $81,450
- Volvo S80 T6  $79,950
- Volvo S80 T6 R-Design $81,450
- Volvo S80 V8  $98,950
- Volvo S80 V8 R-Design $101,450
