Tech giant Apple has previewed the latest version of its Apple CarPlay at its Worldwide Developers Conference, the company saying the updated platform heralds a “beautiful new design” while delivering “intelligent experiences”.
Already used an incredible 600 million times a day, CarPlay will adopt the same Liquid Glass design as its phone, plus a useful compact view for incoming calls that no longer fills the screen, obscuring the satnav instructions.
Other changes include the launch of smart widgets that are thought to operate connected devices like opening or closing an electric garage door.
Users will also be able to see their Live Activities, which displays real-time data on display within the screen.
CarPlay has changed the way drivers can interact with Messages, with users able to pin conversations and easily reply with ‘Tapbacks’ that allow a quick thumbs up or thumbs down.
Other enhancements include tweaks to Maps that remember places you have visited, plus intelligence that learns your daily routine and can auto-present the driver with their preferred route or notify them of delays on their commute home.
Apple has already revealed its CarPlay Ultra, which will launch in Aston Martin before being rolled out to other brands like Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. CarPlay Ultra features custom displays using the manufacturer’s font and sees the CarPlay screen displayed on every screen within the car, including the digital instrument cluster.
Users will also be able to operate the climate control, adjust the seats or perform other minor functions using the Apple interface.
