Refreshed Range Rover Velar bags plug-in hybrid

New PHEV powertrain in MY23 Range Rover Velar blends 59km EV range with punchy performance

Land Rover has updated its Range Rover Velar and added a new P400e plug-in hybrid model that will be available in Australia from the final quarter of this year.

Combining a 221kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 105kW electric motor, plus a 17.1kWh lithium-ion battery mounted under the boot floor, the 2023 Range Rover Velar P400e produces a punchy 297kW and 640Nm of torque.

That's enough for a sprightly 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

Impressively, with the battery fully charged (30 minutes with a 50kW charger, or 1 hour 40 minutes with a 7kW wallbox), the Velar PHEV can cover 59km on pure-electric power alone. This reduces overall fuel use to just 2.7L/100km.

The new powertrain joins the existing 48-volt mild-hybrid 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder P400 petrol (294kW) and D300 diesel (221kW) and sits above the entry-level 184kW P250 that carries over its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo.

Within the cabin, all variants get an updated version of Land Rover's latest Pivi Pro infotainment system that incorporates an app for Spotify music and now offers an onboard Amazon Alexa assistant if you tick the box for the optional Online Pack.

With Amazon Alexa available, owners can ask to set the destination or find points of interest, as well as stream music, make lists, dial phone numbers or even control your smart home, all using natural speak.

Other tech that was recently introduced to the Velar range include active noise cancellation for greater refinement at speed, and Cabin Air Purification Plus that filters particulates from the interior for improved air quality.

Owners can now monitor the interior and exterior air quality and run additional air cleaning cycles using the Pivi Pro infotainment system.

Finally, as part of the MY23 updates, the Range Rover Velar is said to get enhanced driver assist tech that includes a new rear camera and adaptive cruise control that features steering assist.

From the fourth quarter of 2022, just four trim levels will be available – R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE, R-Dynamic HSE and a new Edition variant. The latter is a new special based on the R-Dynamic SE and adds a black contrasting roof, a black exterior pack, 20-inch gloss black rims, a sliding panoramic roof and privacy glass.

Pricing for the updated range now kicks off at $96,600 plus on-road costs for the P250 R-Dynamic S, while the P400e, which is only available in R-Dynamic HSE guise, weighs in at $138,800 plus ORCs.
