The new Ford Bronco is set to be available with removable doors, based on new patent filings uncovered in the US.
AutoGuide reports the upcoming off-roader will be offered with Jeep-style removable doors and tubular door frames. In the name of safety, the patents reveal how Ford plans to incorporate side airbags into the doors to appease crash authorities.
The images reveal several designs including tubular doors and side impact protection when the Bronco’s doors have been removed completely, ala Jeep Wrangler. Ford will reportedly use chains, links and a telescoping rode which incorporates a built-in airbag to get the system over the line.
The new drawings support earlier patents spotted in March, which show the use of side impact beams that will allow driver’s to hit the road in ‘alfresco’ mode. The Bronco will be available with a folding canvas top in some markets, reports suggest.
Based on the same Australian-engineered T6 ladder frame that underpins the Ford Everest, the new Ford Bronco will be launched in late 2020; just months after an all-new ‘Baby Bronco’ based on the same new rear/all-wheel drive platform that underpins the next Escape and Explorer.
The four new Ford SUVs, which could also be preceded by a new-generation F-150 pick-up as soon as early next year, will be followed by an all-new Bronco-branded ute based on a small car platform, bringing the number of models in the Bronco family to three.
However, none of these five new Ford models have been confirmed as global models produced in left- and right-hand drive, and indeed Ford has already stated it has no plans to sell the Bronco in Australia.
