A revised Renault Kangoo range for 2013 provides the light van with the added capacity to mix it with the big guys at last. The Kangoo Maxi is priced from $24,990 and boasts 33 per cent more goods-carrying volume – now 4.0 cubic metres, according to Renault – thanks to a 384mm longer wheelbase than the current SWB variants. Payload is up also, from 650kg to 800kg.
Powered by a revised turbo-diesel engine, the Kangoo Maxi – rated at 82kW (25 per cent more power) and 240Nm – also features a six-speed manual transmission that contributes to the 5.5L/100km fuel consumption figure.
The Maxi replaces a short-wheelbase turbo-diesel model that has been discontinued, but a new petrol model with manual transmission joins the range. All variants now come with dual sliding side doors as standard. Rear barn doors are also standard, although Renault additionally offers a lifting tailgate option. At entry level is the new 1.6-litre petrol variant with five-speed manual transmission, priced at $20,990. Fuel consumption for that model is 7.7L/100km for the same payload (650kg) and cargo capacity (3.0 cubic metres) as the continuing automatic variant, which is now priced lower at $22,990.
2013 model variants can be identified by the unpainted bumpers, small plastic hub caps and unpainted mirrors that are manually adjusted.
“The arrival of the new Renault Kangoo Maxi opens up many additional possibilities for us in the light commercial market,” said Lyndon Healey, LCV Brand Manager at Renault Australia.
“Plus, the repositioning of the automatic transmission petrol model and a new entry manual transmission petrol model mean that we are able to deliver what our market has told us it wants.
“We enjoyed a very successful year in 2012, with LCV sales up more than 98 per cent. The arrival of the Maxi and the new manual petrol short wheelbase version with its appealing starting price, allow us to expand the appeal of the Kangoo far more than before.”
Two new option packs available for Kangoo buyers are the $2000 Pro Pack and the $3000 Premium Pack. The former comprises satellite navigation, rear park assist, AS4034 compliant cargo barrier and cargo area plastic lining (for wall and floor). For the extra cost the Premium Pack also offers side airbags, body colour bumpers, fog lamps, height-adjustable driver’s seat, electric door mirrors and a non-slip timber floor. Both the petrol variants come with 15-inch alloy wheels when the Premium Pack is ordered, and the Kangoo Maxi turbo-diesel gains full wheel covers for its steel wheels.
“By creating two option packs we are giving customers a very affordable way to equip these vehicles to ideally match their needs,” said Lyndon Healey. “We took on board comments from customers and prospects when we created the specification of these new vehicles, and so we are confident these newcomers will continue the success of the Kangoo in Australia.
“The Kangoo offers very high levels of driver comfort because it is built on a passenger car chassis, and with its frugal and efficient engines, it keeps customer satisfaction high, and running costs low.
“We have also just made Capped Price Servicing at $349 per scheduled service for three years a regular feature of the Renault LCV line up, so when coupled with our three year/200,000km factory warranty and our ever-expanding dealer network, we expect to see many more business operators than ever selecting a Renault Kangoo for their urban delivery duties.”
