Renault set for October launch of Kangoo ZE electric light commercial

Renault will launch its Kangoo ZE all-electric light commercial vehicle in Europe in October with a list price of 15,000 euros ($20,160) in its home market.

Factoring in a 5000 euro government subsidy, that means the electric Kangoo goes to market in France with virtually no premium over its internal combustion-engined stablemates.

With Renault's claim of a 20 per cent maintenance cost advantage, it has the makings of a hit in the urban commercial market – enough to see it employing about 100 extra people to cope with productions increases at its Maubeuge plant, where the Kangoo ZE is to be built, before the end of the year.

Asked about the possibility of bringing the Kangoo ZE to Australia in the light of the Fluence ZE’s arrival here in 2012, Renault spokeswoman Emily Ambrosy told motoring.com.au the company isn’t ruling it out.

Renault sits among the dominant light commercial makers in Europe with a market share of 15.9 per cent across the Continent and 32.5 per cent in France in 2010. The Kangoo claims current market leadership with 17.1 per cent in Europe (including France) and 32.3 per cent in France.

The new range takes two forms: the standard Kangoo ZE two-seater and the Kangoo Maxi ZE five-seater.
