Renault has expanded its Master commercial vehicle range, with single and dual-cab truck variants aimed at taking market share from established performers like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
Boasting rear-wheel drive (through dual-rear wheels) and a full chassis, the new models will haul a 2.5-tonne payload and tow three tonnes, but need only a passenger car licence to drive.
The cab chassis Master is priced at $45,490 for the short-wheelbase (3682mm) single-cab variant and $50,490 for the long-wheelbase (4332mm) dual cab, which will seat up to seven. Renault is also offering the single-cab Master in long-wheelbase form.
Specifying the six-speed 'Quickshift' automated transmission adds $2500 to the purchase price of both models, which come with a six-speed manual transmission by default. Dual-cab variants are equipped with an automatic differential lock as standard (which is optional for the single-cab Master).
Shared with the vans, the engine powering the cab chassis models is a 2.3-litre turbo-diesel engine developing 110kW and 350Nm. Unlike the vans, the engine in the cab chassis models is turned north/south. Servicing (at 30,000km intervals) is subject to a Capped-Price program over three years. The warranty is a three-year/200,000km program offered with roadside assistance for the duration. Comfort and convenience features fitted as standard include: cruise control/speed limiter, remote central locking, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, air conditioning, electric front windows and a chilled glovebox. Options available comprise satellite navigation, power take-off, a tow pack and a reversing camera. All Master cab chassis variants come equipped as standard with dual airbags, ABS, stability and traction control.
In addition to various storage compartments, the Master offers a laptop table on the back of the folding front centre seat, and room for four occupants in the rear of the dual-cab variant.
Enjoying a period of renewed interest in its commercial vehicle range, Renault has sold 364 Master vans this year, and expects sales numbers to improve following the introduction of the cab chassis variants.
“Renault has secured a record result year-to-date for deliveries of LCVs and it is not hard to see why,” says Lyndon Healey, Renault LCV Brand Manager, as quoted in a press release.
“We have targeted the market with a series of customer-oriented features and benefits that LCV buyers really value, such as Capped Price Servicing and an impressive factory warranty.
“We are delighted that Australians are quickly discovering what their European colleagues have known for 15 years, that when it comes to LCVs, Renault has the best vehicle for the job and the balance sheet.
“Now with the arrival of the Master Cab/Chassis range we have the ability to reach into new sectors of the LCV market, particularly the construction and agriculture industries, food transport, councils and authorities, as well as providing a strong and comfortable workhorse for tradesmen who need a large capacity tray and excellent towing abilities.
“The Dual Cab version is expected to be especially popular, not only with work crews, but with families who need more space than a traditional double-cab ute, and still want to enjoy car-like comfort.
“We have specified the Renault Master Cab/Chassis range to suit Australian conditions and we are confident it will prove to be a winner for this market,” he says.
