Renault/Nissan Alliance adopts modular architecture strategy

Shared platform family initially for compact and large cars will yield production savings of up to 40 per cent
Renault and Nissan have announced the Alliance's new Common Module Family (CMF) will see the light of day from this year, with the release of three new-generation SUVs.
Nissan's North America-only Rogue, the Qashqai (Dualis) and X-TRAIL scheduled for a late-2013 introduction will all be built on a variation of the CMF. Renault models to be built on a CMF-based platform will include Espace, Scenic and Laguna.
Renault-Nissan's press release stresses CMF is an architecture family rather than just one platform. In this it follows work undertaken by Volkswagen with the MQB platform for the Golf 7
CMF is expected to underpin the three Nissans and a further 11 Renaults between now and 2020. In what the two companies call "the first deployment", up to 1.6 million vehicles per year will be supported by CMF architecture. Parallels between CMF and VW's MQB are close, with the CMF reliant on modules for the engine bay, cabin, front underbody, rear underbody and electrics/electronics. Thus the CMF is described by Renault-Nissan as a "cross-sector concept" that can encapsulate multiple platforms.
The two companies expect to see savings of between 20 and 30 per cent for component purchasing (based on wider use of common parts and economies of scale), and between 30 and 40 per cent for engineering/development.
"With CMF, the investments in vehicle architecture and non-visible parts are mutualised, resulting in significant cost reductions that allow us to roll out our innovation policy in terms of environment, safety and new technologies for all our customers," said Jean-Michel Billig, Engineering, Quality & IT Director of Renault, as quoted in the press release.
"CMF opens a new era in engineering synergies for the Alliance. This will enable us to pursue volume efficiencies and introduce attractive new technologies in our products faster than before, creating additional value for our customers," said Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi, the Alliance Director responsible for engineering also quoted in the press release.
