Renault-Nissan sells its 100,000th EV
American grad student becomes owner of milestone zero-emission vehicleThe Renault-Nissan alliance is celebrating the sale of its 100,000th zero-emission vehicle to American graduate student Allison Howard.
Howard became the owner of the milestone model, a Nissan LEAF, earlier this month, and drives the car daily to Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
“It just drives perfectly. It’s so cool. I love it!” said Howard. “The fact that it’s all electric and I don’t have to spend money on gas as a college student, that’s great.”
Renault-Nissan has sold more zero-emission cars than all other major manufacturers combined, and has a portfolio of five all-electric models across its line-up.
The Nissan LEAF accounts for more than 71,000 of those and accounts for more than half of all global sales of pure electric cars.
The LEAF sales landmark comes shortly after Renault-Nissan announced the sales debut of its ZOE all-electric vehicle in Europe.
The ZOE has a range of 210km (NEDC) and sells from €13,700 (AUD$19,750) in France (excluding the battery) after the government’s €7000 incentive. Since its debut this March (2013), the ZOE has sold approximately 5000 units.
Renault says it has sold around 30,000 electric vehicles since its first EV, the Kangoo ZE, kicked-off sales in late 2011.
Renault leads the electric vehicle market in Europe with a 61 per cent share. Its line-up includes, ZOE, Kangoo ZE, Fluence ZE and two-seat commuter vehicle Twizy, which has sold 11,000 units since its debut in early 2012.
“The age of the mainstream zero-emission vehicle is here,” said Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and CEO, Carlos Ghosn.
“We expect demand to keep growing as the charging infrastructure develops -- and we remain 100 per cent committed to zero-emission technology for the long-term.”
The Renault-Nissan alliance estimates that its zero-emissions vehicles have travelled 841 million kilometres -- or enough to travel around the world more than 20,000 times -- since their mass-market introduction in 2010. The distance represents a saving of 53 million litres of oil and 124 million kilograms of CO2.
