Retro 200kW Renault 17 Electric revealed
French car-maker’s follow-up to the R5 hatch is lightweight two-door coupeRenault has revealed a stunning battery-electric retromod based on the Renault 17 coupe it sold in Australia between 1973 and 1978.
Following on from the electric Renault 5, the reborn 17 blends many of the original car’s design cues with modern underpinnings and an advanced single-motor powertrain good for a healthy 200kW.
The electric motor is mounted to the rear axle and thought to be the French firm’s most advanced yet, primed to enter production as the ‘e-PT-200kW’ and available as of 2027.
Renault has based its latest concept on an all-carbon-fibre monocoque that keeps total mass down to just 1400kg, including the battery, however performance figures are yet to be announced – a sub-four-second 0-100km/h time is expected along with a 200km/h-plus top speed.
Aspects of the original car that do live on in the resto include the R17’s cabin, doors and windows, albeit adapted to fit and suit the 170mm track extensions in collaboration with French designer Ora Ito.
The cabin itself is nothing short of stunning with plenty of delightful 1970s design cues like the four individual, squared-off instrument binnacles lined-up ahead of the squared-off steering wheel.
The R17 Electric Restomod x Ora Ito will make its public debut at the Paris motor show next month alongside the production-spec Renault 4 SUV.
