Retro Racing Revival

Nostalgia rules as Muscle Car Masters return to Eastern Creek for Father's Day

Bored with socks and jocks? At a loss what to get dad this Father’s Day?

How about stumping up for tickets to the Australian Muscle Car Masters, which returns to Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek on Sunday September 2, for the eighth running of the retro Touring Car racing event.

Baby Boomer dads can relive their misspent youth watching some of Australia's greatest historic race cars and legendary drivers hammering around Sydney Motorsport Park's new 4.5km 'Long Circuit'.

The chock-full line-up features the best of local and international muscle car racing, including the Touring Car Masters, New Zealand's Central Muscle Cars, Group N Historic Touring Cars, Group A and C Bathurst heroes and the thundering, V8-powered Formula 5000 open wheelers.

Those cars deemed too rare or valuable to risk going wheel to wheel against arch-rivals on the track, will perform hot lap sessions throughout the day. One such rarity is the Australian Touring Car Championship winning Ford Mustang of the late Ian 'Pete' Geoghegan, driven by his son Michael.

"It's an incredible honour and privilege to be given the opportunity to drive one of dad's old race cars, let alone his famous championship winning Mustang," Michael Geoghegan said.

"As a little boy I always dreamt of driving this car, so this really is a dream coming true. The only disappointing thing is that dad isn't around to see it."

In addition to the racing and hot lap displays visitors will also have the opportunity to meet some of the sport’s legendary drivers, including Allan Moffat, Bob Jane, Leo Geoghegan, Harry Firth, John Harvey, Colin Bond and many more. Static displays of some of the most valuable road-registered muscle cars in the country will include the Valiant Charger R/T E49, Holden LJ Torana GTR XU1, plus a 40th anniversary celebration of the XA Falcon GT and 30th anniversary of the VH HDT Commodore SS Group 3.

Tickets are $45 for adults, $30 for students and concessions, with kids 12 and under entering free.

And on second thoughts dad might just need those hankies after all – if he comes over all nostalgic-like.
